Magnolia stellata (star magnolia) is a member of the Magnoliaceae family. This deciduous shrub exhibits a bushy growth habit and is characterized by its deciduous foliage. It has a hardiness rating of hardy – very cold winter (-20 to -15ºc) – hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe. Many plants grown in containers will be damaged unless given protection.

When fully mature, Magnolia stellata can reach an ultimate height of 1.5–2.5 metres and a spread of 2.5–4 metres. For optimal growth, it prefers south–facing, west–facing, east–facing aspect and sheltered exposure. It thrives best in clay, loam, sand soil types and should be placed in a full sun, partial shade position.
